My Son The Hero

by Chavah Kinloch on August 19, 2008

This has nothing to do with my art but first and foremost I am Chavah, a wife and a mother so I can’t help but share this story.

I have a four year old son. He has a unique little personality and we get along really well. It seems as though there are two sides to him. One for home and one for kindy. At home he is very sweet and quiet spending most of his day building and creating cities, robots and race tracks out of blocks, lego, books and dvds etc. He falls into the background a lot because he just likes to keep to himself and play quietly.

At kindergarten he is the go-to man. Every child knows his name. As soon as he walks in kids run up and bring hm toys so he’ll play with them. They all yell out goodbye Nas and fight for a seat next to him. Just the other day they were playing a game where they had to pick a kid and every kid picked Nas even though he was already part of the game they were playing. The teacher had to keep telling them to pick someone else. I remember the first time the teacher told me that Nas was more physicaly and mentally able then the other kids I laughed. I figured she was trying to be nice and what better way then to praise my child. I couldn’t believe what she was telling until she reiterated what she was saying with a serious look on her face. So I decided to watch him at play with everyone. He was doing chin ups on the monkey bars, swinging for extended lengths of time on one arm, kicking the soccer ball into the goal and hitting the ball with a bat while the other boys ran around in circles acting like monkeys….trust me, he also does that as well. He is just a regular kid after all. I’d be just as proud of him if he wasn’t as able as he is.

Anyway, to the point. Today hubby dropped him off after kindy and told me what the teacher had pulled him aside to say. There was a boy called Ethan that had climbed into a big wooden box outside by the sandppit. Ethan got stuck and began screaming bloody murder. The childen got scared and ran away, a couple ran inside to find a teacher. Nas ran to him. He climbed on top of the box, pulled him out and carried him in his arms from the sandpit, inside, straight to a teacher. How cute is that?! He’s four years old! Can you just picture one little boy carrying another little boy to safety. I’m so proud! I’m proud of all my kids, they never cease to amaze me. It’s moments like this that make this unpaid job the best job in the world. I never get this feeling from money, never could, never will. I love my kids.
