The greatest thing she’d learned over the years is that there’s no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one.

I’ve been extremely tired the past few days. I’m not sleeping too well, I’m at the stage where I’m just huge and always uncomfortable or in pain. I love having children but I’m terrible at pregnancy which in turn makes me not the best Mum on some days. My struggle right now was the inspiration for today’s quote. Only 4-8 weeks left, I’m praying for about 5.

Kids Drawings

by Chavah Kinloch on May 27, 2009

My husband called me into the kitchen this evening to take a look at a ‘surprise’. Like a lot of other Mum’s out there my children come home with millions of works of art every week. A select few get put up on the fridge, some favorites are framed, others get to be hung in the kids rooms. Today my son came home from hanging out with his Daddy with a gazillion drawings. We asked him to tidy them up and put them away expecting them to end up in his room. Alas, that was not the case. Check it out:

The fridge ran out of room so the floor seemed like a good place for the extras.

I just had to add a photo of my favourite drawing of the day. Can you tell what it is?

I am in LOVE with my camera. It is amazing what you can do with it! Hope you enjoy the images I came up with today.

My husband and I have this rental property, we recently had the tenants evicted. We went over to have a look at the property seeing as it had been a while since we saw inside it because after all, it’s a rental, it’s always been tenanted. Outside it didn’t look too bad but then when we got inside it was a tip. It looked as though it had squatters living inside it. Seriously, it was sick. I can’t believe some people. I shouldn’t be surprised, turns out the tenant is being sentenced for prison tomorrow and we discovered a letter on the floor to another person that was also staying there saying that they were due in court for another offence.

After an emergency babysitting callout to my brother and sister-in-law my husband and I got in there (with gloves of course!) and filled up bag after bag of trash. We spoke with the property manager today who had no idea things had been left how they had and had prospective tenants lined up to view the property today. Looks like we got in just in time. At least I know it’ll smell good! Unlike the stale cigarette smell it had yesterday. Yuck.
I wasn’t angry, I don’t seem to get angry at things like this, it’s really strange. I get extremely rational and plan on how to fix the problem instead of letting my emotions get the better of me. If only I could do the same when it came to parenting! So after an evening of cleaning, as I was lying in bed I started to think how lucky I am and how appreciative I am of what I have and the ability to live a happy comfortable life. I started thinking of my favourite things (aside from friends, family, freedom etc). The little things that make my house a home and make me smile on a daily basis. So here’s a glimpse into our humble abode at the things that make this SAHM’s life a little saner. In no particular order:
1 – My extremely long and deep bath. The photo doesn’t do it justice. Our last bathroom fit one person in it at a time, this bathroom you could have a party in lol.

2- My male torso sculpture. Every guy that visits thinks it’s a sculpture of him haha. Really, it’s my husband lol. It was a FANTASTIC bargain buy off TradeMe for $5.

3 – My framed Tapa Cloth. I’m prety sure this is the Tapa I won for being a good student when I was about 6 years old. It was made by all my classmates, we each had a turn adding something to it. I discovered it while unpacking during our last move. I found the perfect frame for it at Habitat for Humanity and it only cost me $20, score!

4 – My bookshelf. I dream of having a library like the one off Disney’s Beauty and the Beast one day. We have a mass of books just waiting for the day. In the meantime this bookshelf houses our most read/hope to read soon books. They’re all non-fiction as that’s what I’ve been readng the past 5 years. They’re mostly real estate, investing, motivational, trivia and religious books. I also love the bargain buys all over the shelves. One of a kind face sculpture $15 (I know it scares some people!) Native American styled scultpures $2 each, books starting from 10cents each and vases from my secret santa.

5 – My ultimate favourite piece. I saw this piece and went to look at it pretty much every day for a month. I just silently pined after it. Then one day I finally gave in and asked my husband to buy it for me. It wasn’t on sale but we managed to get a decent discount on it.

6 – The funkiest vase. I adore the colours and texture. I got it for $15 on the bargain table at a place called Sassy’s. They’re a store (well at least they were, I notice it’s recently had to shut down) that support workers and artists from third world countries.

7 – FRED! Drop dead Fred my toothpick holder.

8 – Our family photo wall. I often find myself stopped next to it reminiscing on all the captured moments.

9 – My jewellery. I haven’t worn much lately due to getting irritated easily while pregnant but almost all of my jewellery is handmade by my Mum. The jewellery stand was also off a bargain table from some place in Auckland. The lady tried to tell me it wasn’t meant to be there…too bad, it was! Give me the discount:P

10 – This gorgeous feather fan. I got it from the Otara flea markets for $12. I love that place.

So there you go, a glimpse into my life. You can see that I love colour, nick nacks, my heritage, texture and most of all BARGAINS.

Sneaky Snapshots

by Chavah Kinloch on May 23, 2009

We were driving home today going past a place called Queens Park. We love this place. Out the front they have these water fountains. It’s one of those places people park up outside to eat their lunch or dinner. Very, very popular. Here’s what was happening today:

It’s something that happens every now and again. Usually it’s a bunch of bored students. I find it pretty amusing but I know the council hates it. Today the bubbles had blown all the way to the road. Even in the freezing cold it looked like a fun place to jump in clothes and all. Oh to be young and carefree again hehehe.
The bubbles look like a big puffy cloud or a spongey marshmellow.

I attended the Southland Art Society council meeting this evening. It was fun. People actually talked and put foward ideas! Just think how many times you’ve been in a meeting and you’re the only one making suggestions so you just stop to see if anyone else will speak up and you’re left with a constant [...]

Finding Your Inspiration

One of my biggest artist inspirations is Cy Twombly. I had never heard of him before but thanks to a challenge offered by the NZ Art Guild I was introduced to his work. To be honest, when I first glanced at his work I thought ‘really?’ At first glance it looked like a bunch of [...]
