February 2010

We are SO close to having all our ducks in a row now. I’ve been doing all the behind the scenes work and now the flyer is complete. All I have to do now is print a gazillion of them, put them up around town and plan opening night. Woo hoo! That means I have to buy some wine. I don’t drink so I actually have no idea how to do that lol. Twitter here I come! I do know that you can get free wine glasses for the occasion through certain places though, so I’ll definitely be doing that.

Now…to plan some nibbles. How much can 10 bucks buy you? Just kidding…sort of lol.

Now I have to pray I get enough sleep to cope with the week. I can do it! Any suggestions to make the night a good one are welcome.

Art Invasion

by Chavah Kinloch on February 27, 2010

I don’t know where my head has been this month. I think I went a bit silly the week I got sick. It seems I just let everything out of my mind and never pieced it all back together. I JUST today, remembered there are only 28 days in February. Thus meaning that next week is opening night for the exhibition I’m co ordinating  called New Zealand’s Got Talent.

“With artists taking part from both near and far New Zealand’s Got Talent is an exhibition set to feature both award-winning and emerging artists. The aim of the month long exhibit being held at City Gallery, Invercargill is to showcase a broad range of styles and expose the upcoming talent that New Zealand has to offer. From abstraction to landscapes, mixed media to mosaics the amazing lineup of 29 fascinating artists is sure to delight viewers from all walks of life. The show is to have an opening night at City Gallery, Don Street at 7pm, March 5th 2010. The exhibition itself is open to the public and will run from March 5th-31st. Participating artists from the Southland region will be in attendance.

Participating Artists are:

Janet Marshall, Sophia Elise, Kirsty Black, Tanya Dann, Jane Santos, Natasha Shackleton, Chavah Kinloch, Sally Blyth, Robyn Robertson, Amy Mackiewicz, Philina Den Dulk, Sharlene Schmidt, Michelle Wallis, Suzanne Carter, Marimba Powley, Cath Sheard, Tracey Stenhouse, Ambury Hall, Denita Tizard, Kay Ward, Alfred Memelink, Lyn Hurring, Pam Tapp, Ana Ter Huurne, Theresa Cashmore, Melissa McCreanor, Sofia Spirtova, Rachael Inch and Erika Husselmann.”

Tuesday I was in at the gallery with Gabrielle designing invitations to opening night (baby in tow hehe), Wednesday I met Marimba, Thursday I met Philina and all week (and a few before then) I’ve had gorgeous pieces of art rolling up here and at the gallery. It’s pretty exciting and I’m so impressed by the standard of work being brought in. NZ really does have talent.

Amongst all that I’ve had the regular parenting duties with an extremely fussy and pukey baby this week, writing and sending a press release to different medias, school picnics/meeting the kids new teachers, babysitting kids friends and the other bits of work I do from home on any given day. So I’m pretty excited to see this all up and in all honesty, I haven’t even thought about what to do for opening night, I’ve only just started designing the flyer! I hate half a$ed jobs so will make sure everything runs smoothly in the end. We’re almost there though and it hasn’t been too stressful to pull it all together. The artists know what they’re doing and for that I’m grateful, it makes my job a whole lot easier.

Here a couple of shots of some of the packages. There are more but I couldn’t be bothered traipsing out to my studio hehe. I can’t wait to see them all on show!

So the lovely Marimba Powley, a local fellow artist has lent me her ladder to help me with this project. Thank you!

I’m still working through the design process and trying to figure out how to simplify the process of creating the images I want to use without it costing an arm and a leg. I can think of 2 options. One is simple and affordable but getting my hands on the right resources is a bit complicated, the other costs a little more money but makes creating what I want easier. Hmmm what to do what to do. Hopefully I’ll have an epiphany sometime soon.

In the meantime I’ve been trying to implement my theme of ‘heritage’ into the design. We’re true blue kiwis, we love New Zealand, it’s our home and we’re a multi-cultural family which I love, love, love. NZ is honestly the most amazing place like that, so many cultures, so many stories, so many foods and traditions to appreciate! Anyway, I also wanted to include our background cultures. Andrew is full Scottish and I’m 1/2 Samoan so here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

The image broken down:

The Kinloch Clan is what we call our little tribe. It’s just always felt right to say. Obviously clan comes from the Scottish side of things, vikings and all that – teehehe. In Samoan it’s aiga and in Maori it’s whanau. The letters are coloured to feature the design of the Scotland flag. 1 beacause I like the colours, 2 because I like the pattern. The little flower is Samoan, a feminine symbol, the koru a symbol all New Zealander’s are familiar with represents new life, beginnings and growth. There’s a crown over the C because that’s my little signature for my alter ego. I have the nickname Queen-C and I used to always  doodle a crown on everything I owned.

That’s where I’m up to. It’s just a simplified draft but I think you get the idea.

  • I hate mornings. I am incredibly grumpy if you wake me before I’m ready. Not just slightly grumpy…I mean so grumpy you’d never want to talk to me again if you came across this version of me.
  • I have about 12 pairs of sunglasses. I only wear 3 of them. The rest have been scratched, broken or misplaced around the house. I usually buy them 2 at a time.
  • In school I was one of the smart kids. That was until 5th form when I went to my 5th high school in 2 1/2 years and I told the dean interviewing me that I refused to go back to the smart kid class because I didn’t want to do the extra work they make you do in the same amount of time as the rest of the kids got. If you think about it, that’s actually pretty clever :| lol.
  • My first real job was as a hairdresser…stylist as we have to say now.
  • I grind my teeth on either side of my mouth an equal amount of times at random moments. It has to be an equal amount of times or I feel I’m being unfair.
  • I love hip hop, especially 90′s and NZ hip hop.
  • On average I sleep about 3-4 hours a night. Andrew lets me sleep as often as possible.
  • I believe everyone should learn how to use chopsticks. They’re just cool.
  • I need some new bras. The last one I bought was in October last year and I only bought it because I had to go to my cousins Hen’s night and needed more support than a maternity bra offers.
  • I smack my husband when he snores. He doesn’t even notice lol.
  • I weighed 10lb 10oz when I was born so knew my babies would be big but still never expected an almost 12lber.
  • In Auckland, I bought something for everyone but myself.
  • Today I have been extremely homesick.
  • I freaked out when I saw this photo of my daughter and realised she looks JUST like me. I’m hearing it more and more as she gets older and we’re out together.
  • I secretly love it though.
  • I rarely have to discipline my children. I have to teach them how to be mean they’re so nice.
  • I only teach them one line comebacks because they’re not allowed to start fights but I’m a realist and know that kids pick on other kids.
  • I love my dyson. I actually enjoy vacuuming because of it.
  • I sing really loudly when I have headphones on and my kids mock me.
