My Best Friends Wedding

We all have those special people in our lives; who even though as time goes on and you go your separate ways, you always remember them as your close friend and will never forget the great moments they brought to your life. Well today’s post is about my childhood BFF. Her name is Anna and she recently got married. She shared the most amazing video of her wedding and I got a glimpse into her very special day. I Spy With My Little Eye

As I do every month, I was browsing through my new edition of Your Home & Garden Magazine and as can happen I spotted an accessory I actually own. I haven’t updated you with any new pictures of my daughters bedroom makeover yet because I don’t want to give too much away until I’ve managed to get it looking right but I figured I could talk about this.

Can you see the price on those spotted lanterns? I got mine from Iko Iko on K Road in Auckland but I did not pay $29.90 per lantern, nor would I. (Sorry Iko Iko, I do love you!) They are super adorable and I bought mine about 3-4 years ago so I could use them when I finally renovated Vahnija’s bedroom. At the time I bought mine believe it or not purchasing lanterns in NZ was actually a really difficult task, hence why I had to buy them in Auckland from a specialty store. I loved that they were just a little different (multicoloured with the spots) and best of all they only cost me $6.90 each. So I don’t know what happened with the massive price increase but I’m pretty glad to see I bagged a bargain. Thanks Iko Iko.

Vinegar to the Rescue

Something’s come over me. I’m in uber mama mode right now and I’m really looking forward to having the kids at home for the school holidays. I’ve been counting down for the past three weeks. I don’t know what it’s like where you are at the moment but we’re on the verge of getting snow. For a week straight we’ve had thunderstorms & lightning. It is absolutely freezing outside. Last week I was ready to get sent to the nuthouse as my kids attacked each other and me all at once (I’m slightly exaggerating but my well behaved children did disappear) so after getting a sleep in and some time out on the weekend I was ready to take on the new week head on with positive disposition.

Which leads me to what I’m actually sharing with you today, it’s something that I discovered yesterday.

I was making some playdough for Boston to play with. Thinking I had everything I needed so I got straight into it. It wasn’t until I was halfway through the making of the dough that I realised I was all out of cream of tartar. Now this may seem like the most boring post ever for most people but if you’re a parent/teacher and this happens to you you’ll thank me for this. As I was looking down at this big green glob of salty dough I *knew* that I wouldn’t have been the only person in the history of the world to have gotten stuck in this situation so I headed to my good friend Google and asked it for a substitute for cream of tartar in a playdough recipe.

The answer was ‘vinegar’.

About 3 tsp per cup of flour will give you a playdough consistency.

It’s not quite as good as cream of tartar because I find that the dough at times has a tendency to be slightly stickier so makes a bit more mess for clean up but if you were in a situation like mine it’ll get you through the jam no bother. As it turns out I’ve had a house full of happy quiet children for two days now; I can’t complain.

1 – Mini Unicorn Cutter:

Like any good Mum I have a mass collection of cookie cutters…not that I even bake lol but my kids and husband do. Women and children alike will be gushing over the cuteness that is this mini unicorn cookie cutter.

2 – Phone Keys Wallet Rug:

This one is for my husband. These are the three things he carries around and more often than not he heads out to the car and then goes “Oh, I might actually need the keys” and turns back to grab his gear. Maybe big bold letters spelling out exactly what he needs to remember to take with him out the front door would help. Or maybe not.

3 – Baci Milano glasses:

These are gorgeous! The best part, they’re shatterproof (and dishwasher safe). Kid friendly woo hoo! They’re described as baroque & rock water glasses, gothic glitz n glamour. I get weak for colourful tableware.

4 – All My Friends Are Dead:

I really want this book. It is hilarious! I came across it in one of my local boutique stores and was crossing my fingers that I’d be getting it for Christmas. Andrew got the hints and went to buy it last Christmas but even though he went in the same week I saw it, it had sold. *cry* We stood there reading it and cracking up in the middle of the store, which then led to other people going over to read it and doing the same thing; which then led to a big conversation with the ladies behind the counter about how funny it is. It is that funny.

5 – Once Bitten Toothbrush Holder in Zoo:

I have a little guy in my home that is obsessed with toothbrushes. No toothbrush is safe around him, he treats them all equally. My children have brushes that have suction feet but they’re getting bigger and need regular toothbrushes now. Kids love novelty products like this so I figure why not keep this essential routine fun for them as long as possible.

6 – Kate Moss’ Wedding Veil:

Yes, I am completely in love with this 1920′s inspired veil. I’d heard a lot of bad remarks about supermodel Kate Moss’ choice in wedding attire but I personally love the bottom half of her dress and would wear this veil just for the fun of it if I owned it! It’s a pity I’ve already gotten married because I would totally rock it. Love love love.

That’s It! I’m Moving In With LeeAnn Yare

I mean, wouldn’t you? (Warning, photo overload)

We’re slowly working on our home and if you were to look into the future, our house would look pretty similar to this. In fact she’s got products I’ve got on my wishlist all through her home and we even have the same tiles in the bathroom. In the July 2011 edition of Your Home and Garden Magazine LeeAnn mentions that she just worked with what she had house-wise and made only cosmetic changes. This is exactly how we’re doing things too. It’s so much fun.

For us and our pretty close to zero budget it’s taking a while but creatively it’s a real challenge and I’m really thriving on it. Making use of objects I’d long forgotten about and mixing pieces of furniture from different rooms that hadn’t been put together before is giving me a natural high every time I work on a room. Which reminds me, Andrew and I have made a lot of progress on Miss V’s bedroom, I’ll have an update for you soon hopefully. I’m just waiting for a few more projects to come together first. Stay tuned!

If you’ve never worked on a home before, I have to say that working on a kids room is quite possibly the most fun project ever. With Vahnija’s room I’m really going for it, she’s a lot like me so I know I can really let loose. When I was working on it this past weekend I made joke that I was moving in and she could take my room. Letting loose creatively really makes me wish I could work on all three kids bedrooms at once; finish of The Boss’ humble retreat and give the big boys a room they’ll never want to leave. It makes me think I should be working harder to actually bring in some money to support my DIY habit *blush*.

I enjoy seeing LeeAnn’s bold, unapologetic use of colour and pattern all throughout her home, especially her kids rooms where she’s got all the colours of the rainbow working together (much like Miss V’s room!) and where she’s patched together old wallpaper samples to create a huge mood board on the walls of her home office. I can dig it.

I Don’t Do Minimal

Architectural Digest has taken it’s readers inside style mogul Iris Apfel’s Manhattan apartment. The article gives such a great insight into who she is and her career history you should pop over and read the article for yourself.

“..She had a talent for scavenging from junkyards and flea markets the kinds of furniture and fabrics that were hard to come by {in wartime}. The thrill of the hunt was contagious..”

That right there… any time I hear something like this about a person I get roped right in to their world. I tend to believe that if myself and that person were to ever meet, we’d be the best of friends forever.

“…It was her eye for unique furnishings and objects, as well as her facility with color and texture, that brought her instant success. “I don’t do run-of-the-mill stuff,” she says, “and I don’t do minimal.”…”

Got to love this woman. We have the same outlook on style but her budget’s just a tad bigger than mine.

I wish I could rummage through this apartment and treat it like a unique thrift store that was available only to me. I can see sculptures, shelves, a table, frames, books, bangles and cushions I’d walk out with.

Bostons New Beanie Designs Hat

I love good mail days! A new hat arrived in my mailbox for Boston, all the way from the U.S. and it only took about a week. I was offered my choice of hats from Beanie Designs an online handmade hats and head pieces store (which I’m going give the title of the cutest baby hats in the world ) and after much… and I mean MUCH consideration I finally settled on getting the Organic Cotton Brown and Cream Mohawk Hat in size 1-4 years.

Isn’t it gorgeous?! There were so many cute baby hats to choose from I would find one and say “Oh that’s my favourite” keep looking and find another to say the same thing about.

I have now found my new source for children’s hats. Seeing as I live in one of the coldest places in New Zealand, this is a good thing. I was honestly raving about this place so much my husband jumped online for look and then I started hearing him gush too.

Boston was unsure at first about wearing a hat but all my kids are like that when they’re small. They’ll wear a hat for 2 seconds before they yank it off. So what I really like about this hat in particular is that I can tie it underneath his chin and he can’t pull it off! We’ve had other hats in this style (with the ties) but he’s managed to get them off within minutes because even when tied there’s enough wiggle room to get out. This hat is styled perfectly and the way it sits on his head means he just can’t do that. It looks comfortable and doesn’t choke him…because we’ve hat hats that tied so strangely they looked painful for the kids to wear.

I’m pleased to say though, that after the first night that he wore his hat out he has fallen in love with it and doesn’t even attempt to remove it. Just plays happily with it on, keeping that fuzzy little head of his warm. We’ve had compliments on it wherever we’ve gone too.

So I’m in love with this place. I love that the owner was taught to crochet by her husband (can you believe that?) and that each one of these hats is made by hand. I’ve got my eye on more of it’s designs and can’t wait to place my next order.
