For the past 2 weeks I’d been counting down the days until Invercargill had it’s Multi-Cultural Food Festival. I was super excited to be able to go there and try little bits of food from all the stalls while watching some performances.
So we went along today. We packed the tribe into the minivan and ventured out in the rain only to be thoroughly disappointed. I was so sad! We got there and the thing only for sale was fish n chips. I can buy fish and chips on any street corner of NZ. What the heck is that about!! I was so looking forward to getting my eat on. I was especially excited about going to the Polynesian stall. I’ve been craving some home food for months. We never cook island food because 1- The ingredients cost a ridiculous price down here and 2- It’s terrible for the waistline. I just about cried when I saw that the only things they had for sale were coconut buns and cook island potato salad that looked like they had been overcooked and left sitting out all day.
We found our way out through the crowd and for the past five hours my hubby and I have been cooking like madmen. Seriously, we were soooo excited about today and were crushed when the result was so bad. Instead of crying about it we decided to come home and have our own multi-cultural cuisine cook up. The kids helped us out and it was such a fun day. The best day I’ve had in a long time. We cooked way too much but a friend has popped over to help us eat it and the rest can get stored in the fridge and freezer until we need it. From thai fish curry to tandori chicken, chop suey to what we call hangi in a pot. It’s all there!
Now I’m off to get a plate.
Hope your day was as fun as mine. What’d you get up to?
