auckland

Doesn’t this title just grab you? It sounds intriguing doesn’t it? To me it does anyway.

This is the title of upcoming solo exhibition by Karley Feaver. Remember Karley? I mentioned her last week in this post, she was kind enough to send me gorgeous fabric to use in my projects.

Through a series of interviews Karley has explored peoples personal experiences and opinions on escapism.

It all began 3 years ago when Karley found herself going through a tough time; unhappy she recognised she was practicing her own form of escapism through her thoughts.

With each participant being asked the same 12 questions; Karley has taken their responses and translated them into bold abstract art works with each painting telling a story set to evoke emotions through imagery and colour.

Told you it sounds intriguing.

Karley has published the interviews on her blog and believe me, they make for great reading. A book containing the interviews is also available.

You are invited to view the exhibition Interview With Escapists which will be held at The Depot Artspace in Devonport, Auckland from July 10th-22nd 2010. Karley will be holding an artist talk for all on Wednesday 14th July at 6:30pm. Until then, catch her in the top 10 column in today’s Viva I believe!

Borrowing a question from Karley (I thought this one was a real goody):

Have you ever experienced going beyond moderation in daydreaming or escapism?

I would love to read your answers and experiences if you’re willing.

Every year the NZ Art Guild and it’s members take part in a collaborative project. The finished product is then revealed at the Emerge exhibition and auctioned off on TradeMe to raise money and awareness for The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. 100% of the proceeds are donated.

This year’s project is titled Bloom. It incorporates 64 individual artworks, created by 62 New Zealand artists that were invited to interpret the theme New Beginnings and Growth. The collaborative project results in an artwork 1/3m x 1.3m.

Can’t wait to see this year’s result!

I’ll be sure to put the link up to the auction once the reveal is done.

Those in Auckland are invited to the Emerge exhibition and reveal of Bloom at Bruce Mason Centre, 6:30pm, 2nd July 2010.

I finished one painting and have packaged it ready to send back to be part of this years NZAG collaborative project, so half way to completing another thing on my list. It’s done on a small piece of wood.

The big reveal of the collaboration will be done at the Bruce Mason Centre on July 2nd in conjunction with the 2010 Annual Members Exhibition. It will then be auctioned on Trade Me. All proceeds will be donated to the Mental Health Foundation of NZ.

Right now I’m dying for some big, fresh, new canvases. Instead I only have some small fresh ones, some small boards or some larger incomplete pieces I’m absolutely ready to paint over. It’s a dilemma I know a tonne of other artists face regularly. My mind is full of ideas! I think it’s time to clear my walls so I can restore my stock and let progression take place. It’s really hard to  move on when surrounded by work. Why is that I wonder?

I’ve got two shows coming up in the next couple of weeks, one in Lumsden and one in Auckland. Opposite ends of the country, yikes!  Exciting though. I’ll put up a full list of details so that if you’re in the area, you can stop by.

I’m taking to sketching a lot right now. I’m really feeling the need to unleash some big bold strokes and get messy though. I just feel like I’m editing myself.

I’m usually really good at allocating time for each little thing that needs to get done but a baby really limits how much time you can spend on any one thing. He’s still going through a very clingy stage right now. I’m sure this stage will be over all to soon though and I’ll completely forget I ever had this issue. He’s  into EVERYTHING. So the dilemma of keeping my gear out of his way so he doesn’t pull it on himself or eat it is always there. I have a studio up the back of the house but I rarely use it because I like being in the house. So I usually take over whatever space I can lol.

Oh well, I’ve dealt with the issue of keeping little ones away from my gear 3 times before, I’m sure I can do it once more! It’s funny how quickly you forget about these different stages.

Now, after all this talk of painting, I think I see tomorrow being filled with nothing but painting during naptime and playing with a baby.

Some breakers dancing at First Thursdays right next to my walls. Sorry don’t know what their crew is called but apparently they teach at Youthtown for $4. I liked the guy in the white tee’s style.

So Long, Farewell

by Chavah Kinloch on February 1, 2010

I’ll see you when you get there…hmmm any other lyrics I can throw out there?

I’m on the plane tomorrow and may or may not be posting from my hotel room. I can access the internet if I wish BUT it’s a ripoff and I’m way too frugal to overindulge lol.

My bangles didn’t arrive today. I REALLY hope they arrive tomorrow :( Pleeease universe, hear my plea. I have my backup plan ready but nothing beats the real thing.

If you’re in Auckland, stop by to see me and a bunch of other talented artists at St Kevins Arcade, K Road, 6pm-9pm, Thursday the 4th Feb. Don’t forget my work will be for sale so bring some cash along with you. :D

Right now it’s looking as though I’ll be walking down K Road tugging a suitcase full of paintings along behind me. It should make an interesting sight lol. It’s either that or I call a cab, which just seems silly because the place I’m staying isn’t that far from the arcade. We’ll see how courageous I feel on Thursday. If you see me doing this, promise not to take a photo and send it to anyone ok? lol.

I hate leaving my family. Tonight is hard. I’m pretty sure I’ll have a good time though and Andrew has plans for while I’m away. I’ll try and get some fun photos to share with you so watch this space! Let’s make this trip worthwhile.

So now I’m off to finish the last layer on a painting. I’ll be all ready to pack my bags in the morning all going well. Oh wait… No I won’t. I just remembered I have to wash the 3 outfits that actually fit my butt right now. Dang. Oh well. No rest for the wicked!

See you all again soon my lovely lovelies!

A Glimpse Into My Sunday

I’ve basically spent the day preparing my pieces to take with me to Auckland. I think I’ve had a million breaks today, focusing right now seems to be a bit of an issue! I just want a break. 2 more days… Then I’ll get 4days to myself. It’s kind of bitter sweet. All school holidays [...]

Want to Have a Nosy?

So we’re just over a week away from First Thursdays now. If you’re in Auckland, come down for the art walk/show. It’s on K Road, 4th Feb, 6pm on. Te Karanga Gallery will be showing 5 or so artists (me), there’s verona cafe, St Kevin’s arcade and I’m told there’ll be drinks flowing and a [...]
