business

Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That’s what little girls are made of! The heck with sugar and spice.

Bethany Hamilton

I came across this quote a few months ago and have wanted to share it since then. Isn’t it great? It takes us women out of the ‘sweet’ box and shows that we’re just as intent on doing what we really want to do as any man out there.

I’m sorry for being so quiet last week. I had an awful week as far as rest goes. I spent the entire weekend sleeping and cleaning because I was barely able to function after five days of insomnia.

I don’t mind the lack of sleep, what bugs me is how badly it affects my ability to string sentences together. It renders me incapable of focusing and in turn my essential daily communication and work suffers. So all going well, this week we’re back to normal!

I’ve got some new businesses to introduce you to this week, by women who were once little girls but have grown to fit the exact description in the quote above. Well, maybe, like me, there’s still a bit of sugar and spice in them hehe. I look forward to sharing their details with you! I hope you’ll join me.

Catch you then :D

Denay Davis is a woman taking it all in her stride. With her original website Cooking With Denay becoming so popular she needed to expand to Home Based Baking; Denay has created a business online by teaching others how to start up and run their own home based bakery. Something she has some very impressive experience in.  Home Based Baking offers an amazing knowledge base with resources including posts, pod casts, recipes and live chat.

How would you describe yourself?

I would describe myself as a mother, a daughter, a sister, an educator and a woman of God. I am committed to making the world a better place and helping all who are committed to that goal.

What inspired you to do what you do?

I am a good baker and I learned early that if you can bake you can cook and if you can cook you can nourish the souls of the people you love and those who cross your path…it is a good thing to do!

What would be your best advice for someone wanting to go into business for themselves?

Fight fear! Plan your work and work your plan and try not to become discouraged when things don’t work out as you want, that’s all a part of life, business life too.

How do you handle all your different responsibilities, what are your priorities?

I take each day, one day at a time. I make a list of what I want to accomplish from day to day and I make time for myself, to meditate, rest my body and mind and share time with my family.

Any goals for the future?

My goal for the future is to open a small bakery that will not only feed my community but also work as an educational facility to show others how to start and operate a bakery business. “The Bakers School”

Tell us a little bit about your family and relationship, if you’re in one:

I come from a small family and I love them all dearly. My parents were in business for themselves and that entrepreneurial spirit definitely rubbed off on me.

Biggest life lesson?

Accept change with style and grace because nothing, absolutely nothing stays the same!

Biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?

Just when you think all is well, you get a curve ball and you’re back in the mist of change…remember change?

What do you do on the hard days, we all encounter them:

I pray not only on the hard days, but daily, it is a constant reminder that I am in control of nothing!

How do you relax?

I love movies, funny movies and I love to read.

It’s time for a confessional. You know the drill! If there’s something you need to fess up, this is the place to do it :D

  • I’m over Invercargill. It’s been great but I’m done now. If relocating 6 people was as easy as relocating one, I’d be out of here already.
  • My cellphone is dead. It’s been dead for over a week. This is normal. I think I’m the only person in the world that doesn’t care about texts.
  • I’ve dressed up just to stay in and work today. I’m a trackpants worker, it makes more sense to run around after kids and get paint on those than a nice outfit.
  • I have to buy new winter wardrobes for all of my children because they’ve grown so much since last year. I wish I had more money.
  • I cut myself a new fringe last night. I have a great stylist but I only see him for ‘real’ cuts.
  • My husband walked in after his basketball game and saw my hair. I didn’t think he’d even notice but the first words out of his mouth were “Wow, your hair looks so good.”
  • Every month for that one week, I drink chocolate milk like crazy. The cravings are so bad.
  • I’ve been telling a lot of people in my life the truth lately. It’s been extremely hard on me to not just smile and nod to keep the peace but I’m proud of myself for not living a lie. I am responsible for my own life and I don’t want to feel stressed out in a situation that could have been prevented by just speaking up.
  • In real life I don’t reference my being an artist to people I meet. No one questions me anyway. They see four kids and leave it at that. The people that have found out, have found out through newspaper articles or the grapevine.
  • If you visit my house though, it’s pretty obvious there’s an artist in the house. For some reason everyone assumes it’s my husband. Not once has someone picked me first?!
  • I get so annoyed that it costs me $80-$100 to buy fresh fruit for the fortnight when I know in Auckland it only cost me $12-21.
  • I need a holiday and a gym membership.
  • My daughter turns 8 next week. I can’t believe it.
  • I’ve been thinking about my 30th lately. I still have over 4 years to go but I’m thinking I want a big celebration. I’ve never had a big celebration.
  • I miss you.
  • I’ve gotten to the point where things are so busy I either need to hire help or have family around. Neither seem feasible.
  • I collect vases.
  • I purposely search for ‘ugly’ sculptures because I think they’re pretty.
  • I’m going to read today. One book for business and one magazine for creative inspiration.
  • I wish it were summer again! I’m not built to handle the cold.
  • My husband is like a hot water bottle so in summer I push him away so I don’t die from overheating and in winter I snuggle in as close as I can.

Happy confessional everyone!

Heidi and Louisa are the masterminds behind the online store Belly Beyond. Seeing a need in the market for a place where new and expecting parents could purchase items that were both quality and affordable, knowing the two didn’t have to be mutually exclusive,  these two friends set about working on their dream in 2008 and have managed to create a  multi-award winning business. 100% NZ owned and operated, they say they are quickly becoming known for their crazy sale prices on designer brands. Hear that, designer brand sales! Oh yes, please. Be sure to check out their website and don’t forget to visit their blog; where they’re currently holding a not-so-ordinary month long challenge much like one I mentioned in Blog Idol 2. If you know what I’m talking about, I bet your smiling. Head on over and join in!

How would you describe yourself?

Two halves of one whole. We work incredibly well together and bring different skills to the business which means we naturally gravitated into our roles and don’t fall over each other in the same tasks. That we were best friends before we started the business has been a huge advantage and we really do enjoy going to work every day!

What inspired you to do what you do?

Neither Heidi nor I wanted to have to go back working for someone else and knew that we wanted to do something that could be run from home, at least initially. We had been quite restricted in our previous roles and were looking for an outlet for our ideas and creativity. Our very first product was just one large bag, filled with newborn necessities, but we quickly realised it would never become a business that would support us both. We noticed there were a lot of online baby sites either with a really budget mentality in shopping experience, product or service or if they were boutique focused, their range was incredibly restricted. We wanted to bridge that gap and bring quality essentials together at great prices.

What would be your best advice for someone wanting to go into business for themselves?

Just start! Work on your business ideas little and often and if you keep at it a business plan will form. Be aware that working for yourself takes commitment and dedication and it’s by no means the easy option.

How do you handle all your different responsibilities, what are your priorities?

How do we handle our responsibilities? We don’t! We seem to have a never-ending to do list and rarely get time out from the business. During peak times we work close to 80 hours a week each but we still wouldn’t trade it for a 9 to 5 office job. We try to ensure we have time out with the kids every day and some family time on the weekend.

Any goals for the future?

Plenty! It’s a matter of prioritising which ones to attack first. Bigger picture goals though are for the short term to grow the business and for the long-term it’s to get a much more reasonable work-life balance.

Tell us a little bit about your family and relationship, if you’re in one:

We both have incredibly supportive husbands and two children each. Louisa has a two year old and one starting school next month, Heidi has a 14 year old and a 1 year old. It’s definitely a family affair, from our husbands domestic skills to their business advice and our parents help with the kids we are a close knit bunch and being best friends adds to the dynamics.

Biggest life lesson?

Treasure your family and friends. Everything you may be working hard for is empty if you haven’t got special people to share it with.

Biggest lesson you’ve learned in business?

Know the difference between business friends and friends in business. The majority of people genuinely want you to succeed and in general we would say embrace your competition as they can be your biggest motivator.

What do you do on the hard days, we all encounter them:

We are lucky that we have each other to bounce off and vent to on those hard days, it would be very different and lonely if it wasn’t a partnership.

Our husbands are a great source of advice as well, business men in their own right they often show us another angel to look at things when we can only see the down side.

How do you relax?

Funnily enough we relax by talking business on the phone and when we hang out with the kids. Louisa relaxes with social media time and Heidi loves to shoot stuff!
